Fences

Fences by Shannon McKinney
This novel contains all the emotions and reactions involved with interracial relationships. It is a realistic depiction of how school integration developed and how some people accepted it and some resisted it as a way of life in the 1970's. "Fences" shows how change is not an easy adjustment for adults. It teaches us a valuable lesson in seeing people for what is on the inside rather than looking at the color of a person's skin and shows us that people cannot be protected from life by the fences they build around themselves. This was an enjoyable and enlightening novel which has a unpredictable ending.

Found - One Father (Romance)

MOST EXCELLENT - GREAT CHANGE OF PACE!
What a wonderful change of pace - Chapter one starts by giving you a shocker.
Jill has decided to leave her husband, Aiden. Most of the trouble started with the pregnancy and birth of their daughter, Maddy. [It really starts you wondering]

Aiden appears too calm and detached. She's leaving him for cryin'-out loud! He isn't even going to contest the separation.

Of course, unbeknownst to Jill, her friend and neighbor, Eric Simmons is trying to help it along. Aiden did come up with a great pearl of wisdom in telling Jill that a man and woman can't be friends without someone getting emotionally involved.

Then came the plane wreck and Aiden losing his memory - what a change that brought about. Now suddenly we are getting litle clues to his problems. And as his memory starts to return - well, Jill wants to try again but what will happen when he remembers the separation?

Ah, the story gets better as these two characters learn how to express their love.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - definitely a keeper for a shorter story.

A Wonderful mystical book!
This book is highly recommended for its telling of a famous story. It has a quietness and gentleness about it that I did not expect. I would read this story to my class when they are learning about the middle ages and during the Christmas holidays.

Good Health in a Toxic World: The Complete Guide to Fighting Free Radicals
Published in Paperback by Warner Books (October, 1994)
Authors: Sara Shannon and Dan Roehm
Average review score:

Uniquely important to our times, How to maintain your health
This book is worth six books! It tells you the crucial facts on how to maintain and enhance your health within the context of our increasingly polluted Earth. This bookis NOT "Thin Thighs in THirty Days". It is nitty gritty. Medical research tells usthat all degenerative disease states are related to EXCESS free radical production. How to counter this is the KEY to survival. And what causes these excess free radicals? The soup of toxins we are nowrom pesticides in your food to radioactivity in your air. Finally, to be trulyh healthy we MUST have a healthy Earth, and this book also makes this point clear. And this is the point most authors do not want to touch. Here you get the bare truth. Forthose who care and those who are willing to make an effort. sarasara

The Goose Girl
Published in Hardcover by Bloomsbury Children's Books (July, 2003)
Author: Shannon Hale
Average review score:

Beautiful read-aloud
I had this book read aloud to me as I nursed my new baby. Although it's prose, it reads beautifully, like poetry. I was captivated by the multi-sensory descriptions, which drew us right into Ani's world. Towards the end, our reading sessions lengthened because we just couldn't wait to find out what was going to become of the heroine! While the story is intended for young adults, any grown up would enjoy this beatiful novel.

terrific fantasy about a princess
This is a long, delightful fantasy about a princess who grows and changes through adventures. It has some romance but is mainly about her changes in fortune when she leaves home. It is long but doesn't feel long, and I was sorry when it ended, although the ending was certainly satisfying. --Kathleen Odean, author of the guide, Great Books for Girls

Government Proposals: Cutting Through the Chaos
Published in Hardcover by Management Concepts, Inc. (March, 2001)
Author: Rebecca L. Shannon
Average review score:

A Sane Approach For Writing Government Proposals
I found this book to be an excellent tool for small businesses who are involved in government proposal writing. Resources are limited for small companies so it is more essential that every resource is used to increase the odds in winning bids. The author has an inside focus as she has worked in Washington, DC for 16 years as a proposal writer. She outlines a systematic approach for writing proposals and gives details down to the roles various individuals within the company must assume. She includes several checklists that are extremely helpful as guides in the Appendix. We are currently focusing on increasing our hit rate with proposals and found many of the organizational strategies in her book quite helpful. For example, how to organize the right team for the particular proposal, the leadership of the team, the structure of the proposal and the production of it. I find the bid process often confusing when we are trying to get the proposal out the door and we are pulling all nighters! This book helps place some strategic thought and long-term planning into formulating practices that are ongoing instead of bid to bid.

Govoni & Hayes Drugs and Nursing Implications
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill/Appleton & Lange (January, 1995)
Authors: Margaret T. Shannon, Billie Ann Wilson, Carolyn Stang, and Janice E. Hayes
Average review score:

The most useful book for care plans and practice.
The detailed nursing implications of each drug make the monitoring of patient care for side effects and interactions more reliable and complete. The listing of interactions with other medications is a valuable tool. This book explains in nursing language the physiological action and use, gives details of adverse reactions and what to look for, as well as drug absorption and interference with diagnostic tests. A valuable tool for care planning and client teaching.

A Greater Glory (Trials of Kit Shannon, 1)
Published in Paperback by Bethany House (February, 2003)
Author: James Scott Bell
Average review score:

A great character continues!
I'm SOOOO glad this character, Kit Shannon, is back for more books. My only complaint is these books don't come out fast enough!

In this one, Kit is faced with another murder trial, and this time gets help from none other than the young magician, Harry Houdini.

It is another wonderful story about the friskiest woman lawyer in the country, Kit Shannon.
